The canister filter media must be arranged so that the water flows through the coarsest

media first and then through the finest media. As this filter’s flow is from top to bottom, always arrange the coarsest media at the top of the filter. Sponges are useful to separate different types of media.

Block Blow

the filter is not sealed and will leak when filled with water.

Inspiring Excellence in Fish Care!

Setting Up cont.

The Hoses included with this filter are coiled in the box; they will tend to curl because of this. To reduce this, soak the Hoses in hot (not boiling) water for ten minutes. Then position them straight until cool. PREPARING AND ATTACHING HOSES

FITTING HOSES TO PIPES Fill a cup with hot (not boiling) water and soak the end of the Hose for a few minutes.

While the Hose end is hot, push it as far as possible onto the fitting and allow to cool.

Secure with the Lock Nuts.

Connecting Plumbing

Place the filter in the cabinet. Ensure there is enough room around it to allow access during maintenance.

Decide on plumbing arrangement required and select appropriate fittings. See Arranging Fittings, page 10 .

Assemble Intake and Return Assemblies.

Connect Hoses to the assemblies and place them in the desired position in the aquarium.

Hose Tail

Connect Hoses to the appropriate inlet and outlet, secure by using the locknuts. The Hosetail can be rotated to avoid kinks in the Hose. Locknut

Trim the Hoses to the required length. Allow 10 - 20cm extra slack to make maintenance access easier.

The Spray Bar will give the best circulation in most circumstances. This arrangement is recommended unless it is not practical. Arrange the outlet so that the current creates a ripple effect at the surface. This will maximise the aeration of the water and contribute to a healthier environment for fish. Position it just below the surface to avoid any unnecessary splashing.

water flows down the inlet tube and begins to fill the canister.

Method 2 - Siphon Priming

Temporarily detach the Outlet as shown and create a siphon by sucking on the Pipe. Once the siphon begins filling the Canister Body the Pipe can be reconnected.

If the siphon is slow, you can lower the Outlet into a bucket* to speed it up.

Once the water is flowing , block the Pipe with your thumb and raise it above the water level in the aquarium before reconnecting to the Outlet.

Once the filter and Hoses are full of water, the filter is primed and may be turned on. Ensure your hands and all cables are dry, and plug in and start the filter.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Filter

Unplug all equipment before beginning work on any part of the aquarium.

When performing maintenance on the filter, place a towel* around the body to protect against any water spills. Cleaning a filter can be messy; cleaning is recommended outside or at a sink.

Turn off the power at the power point and unplug the filter.

Set the Quick Release Taps to UNLOCKED and remove it from the Pump Head.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD THE FILTER BE CLEANED?

Canister filters should typically be cleaned every three to six months, depending on the aquarium’s stock levels. Biological media such as Sintered Glass Noodles, Ceramic Substrate and Sponges in this filter only need to be rinsed to prevent them clogging. If carbon* or other chemical media* is being used, it will need to be changed regularly (6-8 weeks for carbon), so the maintenance schedule should reflect this. *Sold Separately

Fill a bucket* with water from the aquarium and take it to the sink or wherever the filter will be cleaned.

Release the Clips and remove the Pump Head. Place the Pump Head somewhere safe where it will not be damaged.

If there is ever a time that the flow of the filter is visibly reduced, the filter should be cleaned immediately. NEVER clean any filter components with abrasive materials, detergents or other cleaning products. ONLY use

products designed for aquarium use. NEVER wash the biological media with tap water as this will kill the beneficial bacteria that break down dissolved waste in your aquarium.

Using the handle, lift out the Media Baskets. Allow the water to drain into the canister filter before removing each Media Basket.

Remove the Sponges and the Fine Wool Filter Pad from the Media Baskets.

Always ensure that your hands and all plugs are dry before touching the power point.

*Sold Separately

12

Inspiring Excellence in Fish Care!

Cleaning the Filter cont. Maintenance cont.

Flush out the Media Baskets with the biological media in the bucket* to remove any solid waste.

The Sponges can also be rinsed in the bucket* of aquarium water. Gently squeeze them to flush out solid waste.

Discard and replace the Fine Wool Filter Pad.

Empty and rinse the Canister Body. This may be done with tap water.

Replace the Media Baskets into the Canister Body.

*Sold Separately

NEVER clean any filter components with abrasive materials, detergents or other cleaning products. ONLY use products designed for aquarium use. NEVER wash the biological media with tap water as this will kill the beneficial bacteria that break down dissolved waste in the aquarium. Take care not to lose small parts when servicing the filter, especially when cleaning components such as the Impeller at a sink. One way to avoid this is to clean small parts in a bucket* filled with some clean water so that any dropped parts are not lost.

13

Inspiring Excellence in Fish Care!

Pump Head Maintenance Maintenance cont.

Turn the Pump Head over. Remove the Grommet with a flat head screwdriver*, then twist the Impeller Cover clockwise to remove it.

Remove the Impeller taking care not to damage the ceramic shaft. A pair of pliers* can help grip the Impeller.

Dismantle the Impeller assembly and rinse with tap water. Pay particular attention to the hole through the centre of the Impeller.

Turn the Flow Diverter clockwise until it disengages from the Primer Outlet.

Remove the Flow Diverter Elbow and Flow Diverter together. Remove the Flow Diverter from the Elbow.

Use a pipe brush* to clean all channels in the Pump Head.

Use a soft cloth* and brush* to clean all other fittings for the Pump Head.

Replace all fittings onto the Pump Head, and ensure they are correctly in place.

• Test the seal, see Testing the Seal, page 8. • Check all fittings. • Prime the filter, see Priming the Filter, pages 11. • Turn on the filter, check that water flows correctly, and there are no leaks. • Check again in 30 minutes.

Lubricate all O-rings before continuing. See Cleaning and Lubricating O-Rings, page 17.

Replace the Pump Head and lock down the Clips. Reattach the Quick Release Taps and lock it in place.

14

Inspiring Excellence in Fish Care!

Maintenance cont.

Hoses and Fittings

Check the fittings for any internal buildup of detritus or algae, which can reduce flow.

If cleaning is required, remove all plumbing from the aquarium and take it to a sink.

Disassemble all fittings and flush them out with warm tap water.

If the Hoses have become stiff and inflexible, they should be replaced.

Use a hose brush* to clean Hoses, fittings and Quick Release Taps.

Reconnect all fittings and reposition them on the aquarium.

15

Inspiring Excellence in Fish Care!

Maintenance cont.

For extended life and ease of assembly and disassembly during maintenance, it is recommended that o-rings are lubricated with an aquarium safe o-ring lubricant such as Aqua One AquaLube*. Lubricating the o-rings will also minimise the chance of parts seizing, leading to accidental breakages during maintenance.

Cleaning and Lubricating O-Rings

O-rings

The O-rings on the Quick Release Taps and the Main O-ring should be lubricated each time maintenance is performed on the canister filter.

To remove the O-rings, use a plastic card*, such as a credit card, to gently lever the o-ring up over the lip of its seat. Then roll it off.

Rinse in fresh water to remove any particles attached. Dry the o-ring.

Put a small amount of lubricant and smear it over the o-ring so that it is covered by a thin film.

Troubleshooting

Most issues with the filter will be caused by a small number of problems. Follow the checklists below to solve any issues you may have. Over time, wear on filter parts will affect the filter function and you may find that a replacement part such as an Impeller or O-ring will be required. Please see your Aqua One retailer to source these parts if required. Occasionally, there may be an issue that is not resolved by following these steps. If this is the case, contact your Aqua One retailer or contact Aqua One Customer Care for further advice.

PUMP NOT WORKING AT ALL Double check that filter has power available. Inspect Impeller for blockage or any signs of wear, see Diagnosing Pump Problems, page 18 . AIR COMING OUT OF OUTLET Check that all plumbing connections are secure and that there are no blockages or kinks, particularly on the inlet side. If you are using an airstone* in the aquarium, move it further away from the Inlet. If the filter was recently cleaned, there may be air in the media. This can be dislodged by gently rocking the filter body back and forth. If air is released, wait until it stops and rock it again. Repeat until no more air is being discharged. Clean filter as described under Maintenance, see pages 12-15 . Inspect, clean and lubricate O-rings, see Cleaning and Lubricating O-rings, page 16. As Hoses get old, the material can become hard and inflexible. While this won’t affect performance it may lead to leaks where the Hose is connected to tap fittings. If this has occurred, replace the Hoses as soon as possible. A short term solution may be to shorten the Hose by 2-3 cm at the ends. *Sold Separately

REDUCED WATER FLOW Check Plumbing for any blockages. Check that the Hoses are not kinked. Clean filter, see Maintenance, pages 12-15. FILTER WORKING BUT NOISY Check Plumbing for any blockages. Check that the hoses are not kinked. Clean filter, see Maintenance, pages 12-15 . FILTER LEAKING Dry all surfaces to help find the point that is leaking. Check that Hoses are securely connected. Ensure that the Quick Release Taps are seated properly and locked in position. Check the O-rings are in place and properly seated. Clean and lubricate O-rings and check for any grit or other materials around them that may be interfering with the seal, see Cleaning and Lubricating O-rings, page 16 . Check that the Media Baskets are properly seated and that the Pump Head is flush with the Canister Body when the Body Clips are locked down.

Impeller Magnet Impeller Well

Spin

Hold Here

The blade section on the Impeller (the blue section) should only turn 180° in relation to the magnet. If it spins freely or at all, the Impeller should be replaced.

Check the Impeller Shaft, it should wear very little but can break. Check both End Caps are present and undamaged. To test the electric coil in the Pump Head, remove the Impeller. Plug the Pump Head in (ensure everything is dry first) and hold the Impeller magnet next to the Pump Head as shown. You should feel the magnet vibrate.

Put the Impeller Shaft through the Impeller and hold the assembly by the Impeller Shaft ends. Spin the Impeller on the Impeller Shaft. It should spin smoothly - if it wobbles, the Impeller may be worn and need replacement.

Check both the Impeller Magnet and the inside of the Impeller Well for damage. The surfaces should feel smooth. If not, they are damaged, and the pump will not work at full capacity. The damaged part will need to be replaced.
