Setting the Heater

working on the aquarium, or removing the heater. Allow 15 minutes for the heater to cool before handling. Never plug the heater in unless fully submerged in water. It is important to maintain the water level at all times.

Allow the heater to acclimate to the water temperature before switching on.

Rotate the Control Knob to set the temperature. The line between the coloured and white sections of the Temperature shows the set temperature.

Setting Up

Consider where you are going to place the aquarium.

Place the aquarium stand on a level surface strong enough to support the weight of the aquarium, all equipment, substrate, ornaments and water in the aquarium. Note that water is heavy (1kg per litre).

1L=1kg

Avoid direct sunlight and areas that experience large temperature fluctuations such as near heaters or air conditioners.

Preparing the Aquarium

Place the PhosNitra into the mesh bag.

Place the Media into the Media Baskets after rinsing.

Carefully unpack all components and remove all packaging materials.

Rinse all Filter Media and components with tap water. This is the only time tap water should be used to clean the media.

Place the Aquarium on a solid cabinet strong enough to support its weight. Be sure to place the Foam Mat under the Aquarium.

Place the Sponge and Media Baskets in the Filter.

Connect the Elbow, Hose and Pump as shown. Lower the assembly into the filter chamber. Attach the Rubber Grommet and Duckbill Outlet to the Elbow.

Ensure that all components of the Protein Skimmer are securely connected. Place it into the Filter as shown and secure with the Mounting Screw.

9

Inspiring Excellence in Fish Care!

Using the Protein Skimmer Setting Up cont.

A new Protein Skimmer, or one that has been thoroughly cleaned, requires a running in period before it reaches peak efficiency. During this time it may may under/overskim. For this reason, your Skimmer will require daily inspection and adjustment. This is commonly known as running in the Skimmer. This process typically takes 1-2 weeks. A new aquarium may have little to remove at first. As the aquarium matures and the Skimmer is run in, it will begin to collect dissolved material in the Collection Cup (known as “skimmate”). Initial Placement Adjusting the Skimmer Water Level When adjusting the water level in the Skimmer, a higher water level will give you more liquid in the Collection Cup (“Wet” skimming) while a lower water level will collect a dryer skimmate (“Dry” skimming).

Ensure that both the Collection Cup and the Intake Silencer are above the filter water.

Adjust the height of the skimmer so that the running water level is just below the narrow section of the Collection Cup

Raise the Skimmer for dry skimming. Slower but less water is lost.

Lower the Skimmer for wet skimming. Faster but more water is lost.

Using Phos-Nitra

Chemical media in an aquarium are used to remove specific waste products that may be difficult to control by other means. All chemical media will have a limited useful life, after which they will be exhausted and typically need replacing. Phos-Nitra is intended to remove Phosphate and Nitrate from the water. High levels of phosphate and nitrate in an aquarium will fuel algae growth and are harmful to aquarium inhabitants at high levels. To maximise media efficiency, the phosphate and nitrate levels should be regularly monitored using Phosphate and Nitrate test kits*. When levels of these begin to increase, the Phos-Nitra should be replaced. Note that Phos-Nitra will not replace regular maintenance of the aquarium. Regular water changes are important to reduce all pollutants in an aquarium and maintain water quality. Both Phosphate and Nitrate are largely the result of food fed to the aquarium inhabitants. Overfeeding should be avoided. Please seek advice from your AquaOne retailer for advice on safe and healthy feeding regimens for your aquarium.

Maintenance

Daily

Weekly

Feed fish and invertebrates.

Check water level and top up if required.

Check that all equipment is running.

Test water with a testing kit*and a hydrometer*.

Never rinse biological filter media such as the Sponge and Ceramic Noodles in tap water as this will disrupt the beneficial bacteria that live on the Media and can lead to harm or deaths of the aquarium inhabitants.

Fortnightly - 25% water change

Make sure that you have enough

water prepared to refill the Aquarium. Wherever possible, prepare the water days or even a week in advance.

Turn off the power and unplug. Remove the Glass Lids and LED Light.

Use a sponge or an algae scraper* to clean the aquarium glass gently.

Use a gravel cleaner* to empty around 25% of the aquarium water.

Remove and rinse the Filter Media in the old aquarium water. Then place into Filter Body.

Carefully refill the aquarium with the conditioned water.

Replace all equipment in the aquarium. Check that your hands and power plugs are dry, and turn the power back on.

Troubleshooting

If you are having a problem that can’t be solved by following these steps, take the item to your Aqua One retailer for inspection, as many issues may be resolved with a replacement part or an adjustment.

The external flexible cables on the LED Light and Pump cannot be replaced. If a cable is damaged, the unit should be replaced.

No Water Flow • Check that power is available and connected correctly. • Pump may be clogged. Clean the pump, see Monthly Maintenance, page 11 . • Check the pump, see Diagnosing Pump Problems page 14. • Water level in the aquarium may be too low. Top up the aquarium. • Filter Intake may be clogged. Remove any materian blocking the Intake. • Filter Media bay be clogged. Rinse Filter Media to remove excess detritus. Pump is noisy and Filter is releasing bubbles

Temperature is incorrect

• Ensure that there is sufficient water flow around the heater. • If the temperature is too high, check that the heater has turned off. If the room temperature is high,

the water temperature may be too high regardless of the heater setting. • If the temperature is too low, check that power is available to the heater.

• Check and clean the Pump. • Position the skimmer lower so that the internal water level is higher. • Ensure that the Air Intake Silencer is clear and above the water level. Protein Skimmer is Not Collecting Waste • Position the skimmer higher so that the internal water level is lower. • Ensure that the Air Intake Silencer is clear and above the water level. Protein Skimmer is Collecting Mostly Water

Troubleshooting cont.

Aquarium Possibly Leaking

If the Filter Intake is clogged and the

water level is already high, it is possible for the water level in the aquarium to rise enough for some water to leak out.

Check for physical damage to the silicone seal and the base of the Aquarium.

Check that the Aquarium is level.

Make sure that the water level is not too high.

If the water level does not drop, turn the Filter back on and monitor the water level. If the water level drops, see your Aqua One retailer for further assistance.

Turn off the Pump.

Use a whiteboard marker* to mark the water level.

Wait an hour and check if the water level has dropped.

D IAGNOSING P UMP P ROBLEMS If you are having problems with the pump, follow these steps to help diagnose the problem. Most common pump problems can be found with these steps.

Magnet

Impeller Well

Check that the blades of the Impeller are not worn or damaged. If the blade section turns separately to the magnet, the Impeller is damaged and needs to be replaced.

Check both the Impeller magnet and the inside of the Impeller well for damage. The surfaces should feel smooth. If not, they are damaged.

Check that the Impeller turns in the impeller well. If it doesn’t turn or the Impeller cannot be removed from the well, the Pump may be damaged and need to be replaced.

To test the electric coil in the Pump, remove the Impeller. Plug the Pump in (ensure everything is dry first!) and hold the Impeller magnet next to the Pump as shown. You should feel the magnet vibrate.
